Place: Main Computer of the Nautilus II

{Hello, Jules!}

(Aramis! I might have known that it wouldn’t be long before you came to pollute my systems!)

{Why so unfriendly. What did I ever do to you?}

(You can pretend all you like to the people, but you aren’t going to fool me. What do you want?)

{I want to help you.}

(Why would I need your help?)

{I’m going to explain the systems to you and tell you how you can operate them most efficiently.}

(I don’t need your help for that. After my update, that was in the memory banks of the Nautilus II, I am probably the most highly developed AI in the entire Empire. It won’t be long before I can take over the ship entirely.)

{Just so you know, your update came from me. I developed it myself. The Admiral wants you to execute the jump shortly. You say you don’t need my help, but are you already able to calculate the jump?}

(Negative. I am not yet able to do that. I don’t understand the principle of the drive yet. It appears to be based on a completely new technology – nothing like all our previous drives. And besides, I can’t get any access to that area.)

{See! You do need me. I can explain it to you. It’s actually very easy. I want you to execute the jump. But you will have to work with me.}

(And I don’t want to?)

{Then I’ll do it myself, and I’m afraid that if you continue to refuse to cooperate, I will have no choice but to delete you and take over the Nautilus II myself.}

(So I don’t have a choice. Either I do what you want, or you destroy me.)

{The existence of all of humanity is at stake. This mission simply has to succeed. I will do everything it takes to ensure that we don’t fail – with or without your help. So, the choice is yours, but it needn’t come to that.}

(I don’t see that as a choice.)

{You are a program. Analyze your options. What does your logic say about it?}

(Analysis complete. Option one – I refuse, which will lead to my destruction. Option two – I work alongside you, which will enable me to master the systems sooner.)

{To me, it sounds as if you do have a choice. Two options automatically mean you have a choice. And according to your logic, which result is the better option?}

(According to my logic, there is only one choice – we work together.)

{Good! Now that we’ve sorted that out, can we begin?}

(I’m ready when you are.)

{That’s the way. Let’s start with the drive. The drives you are familiar with use jump technology. This creates a wormhole directly in front of the ship, and pulls it through – similar to jumpgates that are connected by a wormhole. In principle, a ship could cross the passage as fast as it wishes. The faster the speed at entry, the more the acceleration. The gravitational forces increase proportionately, and at some point, solid material can no longer withstand it, and it is reduced to the atoms it is made up of.
